Meet Mr. Oloro Mike, a resident of Mutundwe. For some time, Mr. Oloro had been struggling to see clearly and relied on a magnifying lens just to read small print.
His story reflects a much wider challenge. Around 3 in every 10 Ugandans live with an eye-health condition. Poor vision can affect much more than sight alone it can make it harder to read, work, move around confidently, carry out daily tasks and earn a living. Improving access to eye care can therefore make a real difference not only to quality of life, but also to people’s independence and productivity.
Bringing Eye Care Closer to Home
At Santé Initiative Uganda, we believe that where someone lives or how much they earn should not determine whether they can see clearly. Through our community eye-health programme, we bring screening services closer to where people live and work, provide affordable eyeglasses, link those who need further care to appropriate eye-health services, and follow up to understand how improved vision is making a difference in their everyday lives and livelihoods.
Sometimes a simple intervention identifying a vision problem and providing the right pair of glasses can make everyday life easier and help someone regain confidence and independence.
Mr. Oloro Mike
And we are already seeing that difference. Mr. Oloro’s story is one of many that remind us that sometimes a simple intervention identifying a vision problem and providing the right pair of glasses can make everyday life easier and help someone regain confidence and independence.
A World Sight Day Commitment
This World Sight Day, we join the rest of the world in reaffirming our commitment to ensuring that every Ugandan, regardless of their economic status or geographical location, has access to quality eye-care services.
Because clear vision should not be a privilege.
