For Maurisia Nakato Kapele in Rubaga division, it restored her ability to provide. As a full-time tailor caring for her grandchildren, declining vision meant she could no longer work, especially in the evening hours.
Her story is a powerful reminder that sight is not just about seeing it is about earning, caring for family, and living with dignity.
A Simple but Transformative Model
Our model at Santé Initiative Uganda is simple but transformative: train Village Health Teams to bring primary eye screening directly into homes, record each detail, then provide and connect people to quality, affordable eye health services. This community-first approach means that eye care does not have to wait for a hospital visit. It can start right at home, where people live and work.
Our goal is that every member of the community has access to quality affordable eye health services and contribute to the fight against avoidable blindness.

The Result: Back at the Sewing Machine
The result? Maurisia is back at her sewing machine, smiling, empowered. Since 2025, we have trained 79 Village Health Team members and screened 2,678 people. That is evidence-based care that reaches everyone.
Eye care doesn’t have to wait for a hospital visit. It can start in the community.
With Gratitude to Our Partners
A heartfelt thank you to Villgro Africa and The Fred Hollows Foundation for the expert training on how to communicate our work that we have received over the last couple of months. Your support is helping us tell these stories better.
