Building the capacity of VHTs and CHWs remains a critical component of health promotion and improvement. That is why, working with KCCA, we conducted a Training of Village Health Teams (VHTs) and Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Community Eye Health Screening and Assessment within Kampala Capital City, covering selected parishes across Central, Kawempe, Makindye, Nakawa and Rubaga Divisions.
The area presents unique opportunities to interact with both refugee and host communities, making it an important setting for integrated, community-based care.
The Goal: Integrated Screening During Household Visits
The goal is to strengthen the capacity of VHTs and CHWs in Kampala to deliver integrated, community-based eye health screening and assessment services during household visits. By equipping these frontline workers with the right skills, we are bringing eye care closer to the doorstep of every household.
Long-term impact of improving access to reading glasses for eligible clients starts with a capable VHT/CHW.

Learning in Practice
The training explored the use of the Ministry of Health CHW Eye Health Job Aid and practical ways of how screening and assessment can be done using low-cost methods. This ensures that VHTs and CHWs can deliver quality services even in resource-limited settings.
Because sustainable eye care is built one trained community health worker at a time.
