Eye Health and Early Childhood: Reflections from Uganda’s ECCE Policy Launch

Last week, Santé Initiative Uganda was proud to take part in the National Launch of Uganda’s Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) Policy a major milestone in advancing the well-being, learning, and development of young children across the country.

As part of the exhibition, we showcased the Santé community-based health model, offered free vision screening services, and distributed both affordable reading glasses and glasses for other vision needs to participants who required them. For us, this was more than a stall activity; it was a practical demonstration of how community-led health solutions can support the broader ECCE and ECD ecosystem.

The link between eye health and early childhood care may not always be immediately visible, but it is deeply important. Vision screening should not be seen as only relevant to adults. Children too need access to early screening and referral, because undetected vision challenges can affect learning, participation, confidence, and overall development.

Strong ECCE implementation requires healthy, empowered families, responsive communities, and practical service delivery models that reach people where they are.

At the same time, when parents, caregivers, teachers, and frontline community workers can see clearly, they are better able to read, guide, teach, care, work, and support young children’s development. Strong ECCE implementation, therefore, requires healthy, empowered families, responsive communities, and practical service delivery models that reach people where they are.

A Systems Approach to Early Childhood Development

At Santé Initiative Uganda, we are committed to positioning community health, vision screening, referral pathways, and affordable assistive products as part of a broader systems approach to early childhood development, especially for underserved communities that are often left behind.

We are grateful to our partners and supporters who continue to strengthen our journey in expanding access to affordable eye health and community-based care.
