Wellness should not be a luxury. That conviction is what took the Santé Initiative Uganda team to Kigali, Rwanda, from 30th September to 2nd October, where we joined health leaders from across 65+ countries at the Africa HealthTech Summit (#AHTS2026). The conversations were ambitious, but one message stood out above the rest: the future of African healthcare depends on integrated, people-centred delivery not fragmented digital pilots.
From Blind Spots to Opportunities
At Santé, we do not see blind spots as problems. We see them as opportunities to introduce new solutions that make care feel closer to the people who need it most. True digital transformation must strengthen trained people, not replace them. A standalone digital solution working in isolation is not the goal; the real measure of success is the long-term continuity and operational longevity of the care behind it. To achieve this, our focus must be on innovating around the broader healthcare system rather than innovating around the health problem alone.
When you feed an eaglet on chicken feed for too long, it begins to imagine that it’s a chicken. But when you remind it and allow it to thrive on its own motion, it realizes that no matter how long you are fed on chicken feed as an eagle, you never lose your eagle-hood.
Professor Patrick Lumumba
The Eagle and the Eaglet
The absolute highlight of the summit was listening to Professor Patrick Lumumba share James Kwegyir Aggrey’s famous analogy. His words resonated deeply with our work. Communities are not empty vessels waiting to be fed solutions from outside; they hold the strength, knowledge and motion to thrive when given the right conditions. Our role is to remind them of that power and build the infrastructure that lets them soar.
Building Locally Grounded Infrastructure
At Santé Initiative Uganda, we are proud to be building robust, locally grounded digital infrastructure that allows our communities to thrive on their own motion. The summit reinforced that this is the path forward not technology for its own sake, but technology that strengthens the people and systems already trusted by communities.
We look forward to working alongside our partners and public health institutions to translate these global insights into lasting community impact across Uganda. Wellness is not a luxury and with the right systems, it never has to be.
