ABOUT - Santé Initiative Uganda

Background

Santé Initiative Uganda

Santé Initiative Uganda was established in response to a persistent challenge: too many people remain excluded from healthcare even where effective interventions already exist. Conditions that can be prevented, corrected or managed often go unaddressed because services are distant, unaffordable, fragmented or poorly connected to the communities that need them most.

Founded by Ugandan health professionals and researchers, Santé combines community health, research, innovation, digital tools and social enterprise to develop practical models that improve access and continuity of care. Our earliest and most developed work is in community eye health. This programme remains our flagship and has shaped our wider approach to last-mile delivery, affordability, referral systems, evidence generation and health-system partnership.

How we work

mSante digital platform

mSante is Santé’s digital platform for strengthening last-mile eye-health delivery. It supports client registration, screening, referral tracking, follow-up, eyewear distribution, stock management, revenue tracking, client feedback and programme reporting. Functions that are still under development should be clearly labelled as being piloted or developed.

Cataract support

Santé does not perform cataract surgery. We work with accredited surgical providers to identify suspected cases, counsel patients and families, coordinate referrals, track completion, reinforce post-operative guidance and support follow-up and access to post-surgery eyewear where needed.

Affordability and sustainability

Santé uses affordable pricing, flexible payment arrangements, SACCO- and VSLA-linked financing, group purchasing, employer-supported packages, sponsored outreach and targeted support for highly vulnerable clients. Revenue from products and services helps replenish stock and sustain programme delivery, while grants and CSR support remain catalytic for growth and inclusiono
